Our Friday the 13th Snow Bear

There was an article in yesterday's paper, front page, about a bear cub wandering around our neighbor and to make sure the bird feeders and animal bowls are still stashed.  The paper said the cub was apparently disturbed out of hibernation from natural or man-made causes and is now finding enough food to stay awake.  We were lucky enough to have him visit us!

The self sustaining geo-dome at Cozy Point

Solar collectors heat the water that runs under the ground in the dome where plants (food) can grow year round in the warm soil.  They also have two large fish tanks that funnel the water to feed the plants, returning fresh water to the fish.

Basalt tree lighting

Anyone know how to flip the video?  I tried for an hour and gave up.

The "real" Santa was too busy with the children so Patti had to settle with this replica half buried in snow.

White fluffy stuff

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!  We got about 12-14 inches.  I know because I shoveled the deck off the master bedroom due to the weight.  Got my exercise in without having to go the gym in 10 degree weather and didn't even need gloves.

Beaver was at work last night...

Add caption
I was looking out over the side yard today and noticed a tree had fallen over.  Upon closer inspection, it was evident that a beaver had been at work.  Maybe the beaver will come back tonight to retrieve his prize and we'll catch it on the critter cam!

Installation of our "critter cam"

It's infra red so I guess it would work on the boat too?  I'm putting out some chicken bones and skins tonight so we'll see what happens after dark.....

What was out there?

Caught a glimpse through the window of something moving way after dark, at about 10:30.  I found these prints on the deck.  Anyone know what it was?

I'm pretty sure it was baby bear.

Sheep dog herding and fighting turkeys

 Strang Ranch, Carbondale, CO

Starting at the far end of the field and directed by whistles from the trainer, the dog herd the sheep through the middle gates, around the handler counter clockwise, through the right set of gates then through the left gates, into a circle in the field, split the sheep into two sets, bring them back together again and into the pen....sometimes.

When the dogs are finished with their task, they take a dip in the pool.
On the way home we came across these two male turkeys battling it out in the middle of the road, stopping all cars, but this picture was the best one from the side of the road....

Look what Bruce found!

We heard something hit the window so Bruce went out and found this little guy.  It was shaking pretty badly so he held in his hand for a while until it calmed down, placed it out in the garage for about 1/2 hour before opening the garage door for it to fly away.  And it did fly away.  Just needed a little warming up and rest period.

Herd of big horn sheep

One ram (center) with his harem.  This was taken on a hike to the Seven Castles area about four miles up the road from us.  The following is a picture of Patti in the gorge.  No flash floods please.

Early Fall snow

Mt. Hayden (14,000 + feet ) from Snowmass.
I don't think either of us can ever get enough of that blue sky... nothing like it anywhere.
Mt. Sopris in Carbondale at 13,953 ft.

OMG! Snow on the ground on September 27 at 6600 feet!

Can't say I've ever seen this before.
Can you say Global Warming?

Yellow cat is back!

Yeah!  Yellow cat survived last winter and is back again to do battle between the window panes with Sven and Gunnar.  This will be interesting.

Ruedi Reservior

Snow on the mountains and the leaves are just barely starting to change.  Look Ma!  No clouds!  This is what we call a "Bluebird" day.

First bear of 2013, maybe the one and only?

He hung out here all day, munching on berries, fallen apricots, what not.  Looks like a yearling to us, very fat and healthy with a tan colored nose.  If we see him regularly, we'll give him a name.  Bear activity is way down from the previous year.  Maybe this yearling got ousted from his hunting grounds and came down here?

Bruce on his government funded egg.

"Getting my tax moneys' worth"

Maybe if I sit on it long enough it will hatch gold?...

skunked

Usually jammed on this day of the year, the Snowmass Village Mall was basically empty.  The Snowmass Wine Festival had been held at this location since its' beginning but they moved the venue so the town is empty.  No balloons for the niteglow because of all the rain.  I was told that the hot air balloons can't get wet because they can't fly.
There's always next year.

A visit from Bruces' sister Donna

Beautiful day at the top of Independence Pass.  Don't we three look happy?  It was probably the best weather I've ever seen up there.  We hit the jackpot!

New update on the "strange and weird"

Last year I posted a picture of this very strange and weird place on the other side of the continental divide.  Looks like whomever is responsible for this added  a few new dolls.
We took Donna, Bruce's sister, over the divide, had lunch in Leadville, stopped at Camp Hale where the 10th Mountaineers trained for cold, snowy, ski training for WWII, and stopped in Vail so she could compare Aspen to Vail.  Aspen won!!  Yeah!  We have history here, Vail doesn't.

Dog day at the pool

Every year, the Aspen Recreation Center (ARC) allows dogs to swim in the pool the day before they drain it for the season, then refill it.  All the dogs have a great time and get along just fine.  All species, all sizes.
I'm going to get Bruce into the lap pool and jacuzzi this week.

A visit to the fairy caves in Glenwood Springs aka Glenwood Caverns

Bruce and Carlos (friend and co-worker) in the caves.  If you are ever in this part of Colorado, the caves are definitely worth the time to go see.  While it was pushing 94 degrees outside, it was a cool 50+ inside.  Glad we brought jackets.
One has to take a gondola up to the top of the mountain before ascending into the caves for a guided tour.  Over the past several years the owners have up graded the attraction by adding rides and an additional cave tour.  We didn't partake in the rides as most are for kids, but next time I think the Alpine Slide might be fun....

Pulled over by a cop and I got this "business card"

Bruce was having abdominal pain and bloating at 1am so we left for the emergency room in Glenwood Springs.  Of course I was driving as fast as I could in the middle of the night to safely get him there and this Sheriff pulls us over for speeding and a malfunctioning head light.  He escorted us to the emergency room before running his "check" on me and the vehicle.  Nice.
No ticket for speeding.  I thought it was interesting that the department puts all these phone contacts on the back of the calling card.  I like the "jail" entry.  I guess my identity is a little confusing with the Jeep being insured in CA, my drivers license in Nevada and the vehicle registered in Colorado.
Bruce is doing fine...it was a small intestine block...they are keeping him for observation.  No worries and no Fox News for me tonight!
