A visit to ACES

ACES : Aspen Center for Environmental Studies

This is a 32 year old golden eagle that has been at the center for 31 years.  It had been found on the back side of Aspen mountain with a broken wing.  She weighs 11 pounds.

A great horned owl who weighs a mere 2 pounds.  It also has a broken wing and cannot fly.  Owls have one ear next the right eye and the other is located down lower on the left side of the face to enable them to triangulate sound locations of their prey.
The tufts on the top of the head are not "ears".  They are just tufts of feathers to camouflage their outline while searching for prey from trees.

Cardondale Mountain Fair pics

In the beer hall...no waiting, no lines.
Master of ceremonies at the Women's log splitting competition.
The most handsome "Indian" in a teepee that I have ever seen.  He had about 35K worth of artifacts in there with him, some were used in the movie "Dancing with Wolves".

Some more government waste...this time in Newport Beach CA

First concrete "dinosaur" eggs in Colorado, now concrete "bunnies" in Newport Beach.  Both examples are stupid and a waste of taxpayer money, in my opinion.  Are these 12 bunnies having a seance? What are they doing????

99.9% of the "people" won't even know why the eggs are located on the bus system routes, nor will have a clue about the bunnies.  But your tax money is being spent.

Am I crazy or are the elected officials?  How could someone with a financial responsibility conscience agree to this?  Most likely the answer was "There was money left over in the budget so we had to spend it".  I actually heard that comment first hand from an employee of mine on the Christmas Party budget so I understand the mentality.  UGH!

How long is it going to take for the ears to be broken off and the body graffiti-ed?  Or a couple of the little ones above to be stolen? I assume they are not "insured" so money either way down the drain.

...I'm becoming speechless and wagging my head more in disbelief.

I'm not meaning for this to become political, but these examples I just couldn't resist.  Sorry everyone.

Rivers' running red

We had a major thunderstorm a couple minutes ago.  With all that runoff, it turns the Frying Pan River red with sediment.  Bet the trout hates it when this happens.

A visit to Doc Holliday's grave site

Legendary gun slinger, gambler and dentist, Doc Holliday died in Glenwood Springs at the tender age of 36 in 1887 from tuberculosis, the same ailment that claimed his mother at age 25.  He was a friend of Wyatt Earp and participated in the Gunfight at the OK Corral.  For relief from his sufferring, he moved to Glenwood Springs to seek relief in the hot springs pools.  He died penniless as was buried in a pine box.  Cemetery records were either lost, destroyed or stolen, so nobody really knows where his final resting place actually is.

4th of July at the Roaring Fork Club, Colorado

No fireworks again this year because of fire danger, so they dropped six guys to fly into the greens instead.
